Having this in mind, along with the inauguration of the college the Department of Tamil was established on 05.08.1994 with 2 staff members. With the diligent work of the faculty the UG Course was started with a number of 6 students and 4 staff members in the year 2005. The journey of the Department was extended by introducing PG Course (M.A Tamil) on 2011. With succession of UG and PG the Department marched a step ahead and embarked part time M.Phil research programme on 2005 and Full time 2011. Ph.D research programme part time on 2010 and full, time on 2012

The Erode Government Museum and Yakkai Heritage Trust jointly organized an Inscription Copying Workshop at V.O.C. Park in Erode. Dr. P. Thilakavathi, Head of the Tamil Department, and six II PG students from the department participated in the event.
Our Tamil Department publishes a biannual magazine titled "KURUNJI." This magazine comprises poems, drawings, short stories, articles, vidukathai, and sol vilaiyattu, written by students and staff members from various departments. In February 2023, the Department of Tamil released a book titled "Tamilar Valiviyalum Kalaikalum" (ISBN: 978-93-95046-02-2) at Aruntamil Amutha Peruvizha seminar. In 2006, the Department of Tamil released a book titled “ Varalatril Arachalur” at Anaithulaga kalaitamil ayvu manadu.

A two-day online international seminar was conducted on November 17-18, 2023. Participants received e-certificates upon completion.
On the first day (November 17, 2023), Professor Dato Dr. N.S. Rajendran, Associate Professor at Cyberjaya University, Kualalumpur Infrastructure University, Malaysia, delivered a keynote address on "Tamil Education in Malaysia - Historical Background, Challenges, and Solutions."
On the second day (November 18, 2023), Mrs. Jaya Maran, Financial Analyst and Speaker from the USA, presented a keynote address on "Tamil Development in America.
On February 24, 2023, the Tamil Department organized the 'Arundamizh Amudha Peruvizha' as part of the 'Muththamizh Festival of Iyal, Isai, Nadagam'. The event featured three segments:
1. 'Iyal Tamil': Dr. I. Manimekalai, Head of the Tamil Department at Kongu Nadu College of Arts and Sciences, Coimbatore, delivered a special address on 'Demadura Tamilosai'.
2. 'Isai Tamil': M. K. Sathyamoorthy, Principal of the District Government Music School, Erode, and a representative of the Tamil Nadu Government Art and Culture Department, Chennai, presented a musical program on 'Isaiyaruvi'.
3. 'Nadaka Tamizh': Students from the District Government Music School, Erode, staged a dance drama titled 'Meenakshi Sundareswarar Thirukalyanam'.

An international conference was organized by the department of Tamil on 03.03.2018 on the topic “Eternal Footprints of Tamil Literature”. The Conference was inaugurated by Dr.Subhashini Kanagasundaram, Tamil conventional Foundation, Germany. Mr. T.K.Dhamaodharan, President of our college delivered the presidential address. Mr.I.Selvam HOD of Tamil &Vice Principal, welcomed the gathering. Dr.C.Kumarasamy Secretary and Correspondent of our college delivered the inaugural address. Mr.C.Palanisamy Treasurer, Dr.P.Logambal Principal felicitated the gathering.
Dr.Subhashini Kanagasundaram, President, Tamil Conventional Foundation, Germany, in her inaugural address inspired the staff and students with her innovative and motivating speech and advised the students and staff to improve the knowledge of ancient Tamil Literature and increase the ability and efficiency of knowledge of ancient Tamil Literature among students. She also stated, that she has done lot of work in Tamil Literature in many countries and in Germany where she is living now.
Dr.Renugadevi, Tamil Conventional Foundation, Madurai, delivered the special address. Dr.P.Chandra, Joint Director, Tamil Development Corporation, Erode, reviewed the conference. Thiru. R.Maheshwaran Librarian, Kandi, Srilanka explained the theme of the conference. Five parallel sessions were conducted by inviting various professors of Tamil from neighboring colleges. All the paper presenters presented their papers in this session. More than 700 students participated in the conference and 200 students and staff from outside college. More than 150 resource papers were presented by the various college students and staff members. This international conference inspired the students of Tamil Literature and many students and staff members have achieved valuable knowledge in Tamil Literature through this conference. This is an other success for the Tamil Department of our College. In the evening, Dr.D.Prathiban, Librarian UVa Wellesa University, Srilanka delivered valedictory address. Certificates were distributed to all the participants. After national anthem the conference came to an end at 4.00. p.m.
In 2006, Navarasam Arts and Science Women's College, in collaboration with Thanjavur Tamil University's Department of Architecture and Thiruvaiyaru Tamilayya Educational Association, hosted the “ANAITHULAGA KALAITHAMIZH MANADU” in the college auditorium. The event attracted participants from various schools and colleges, including students, researchers, and professors.
Our service minded students motivated them in many ways. The main motto of the visit was to create awareness among the young students of our college and also outside world.
Students participate in various experiential learning activities, including inscription copying training, awareness rallies, educational tours, visits to newspaper printing presses, and explorations of temple architecture techniques. They also engage in NSS camps and other enrichment programs. And also Teacher training programs are offered to UG final year students.
Tamil Department students are shining bright, showcasing their talents in district and state-level art and literature competitions. Their outstanding performances have earned them numerous certificates and shields, a testament to their hard work and dedication.
Tamil students excel in district and state-level sports competitions, showcasing their skills in traditional disciplines like Silambam and Yoga, and earning certificates and shields.
The Tamil department has collaborated with Kurinji Kabilar Sangam for conducting many competitions for the welfare of the students. So for 280 students from 2012 to 2017 were participated and won prizes.
Navarasam College of Arts and Science for Women, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Vellur, Tamizhiuakkam on January 8, 2019. As per the agreement, the college committed to collaborate on Tamilization efforts by promoting Tamil thoughts and culture among the younger generation of students. In line with this commitment, the college is actively engaged in Tamil-related initiatives.
Navarasam College of Arts and Science for Women and Ulagathirukural Peravai, Kundrakudi, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on September 3, 2012. As per the agreement, the institutions committed to jointly promote the virtues of Thirukkural among students and the public, and to disseminate Thirukkural's principles globally. In pursuit of this goal, the college organizes annual activities such as Thirukkural seminars, training programs, competitions, and dedication ceremonies.
The Tamil Department offers various extracurricular activities and clubs to enhance students' skills and knowledge.
A weekly research presentation session “Viyazha vatta karuththarangam” is held every Thursday, where Tamil Department students read and present their research papers under faculty guidance .
The Tamil department annually celebrates the birthdays and anniversaries of renowned Tamil personalities, such as Mahakavi Bharathiyar, Bharathidasan, kavingar. Vairamuthu, Abdul Ragumaan as well as esteemed leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Tiruppur Kumaran, and Kamarajar."
Tamil Literary Association:
The association conducts various competitions, such as oratorical, essay writing, poem recitation, Poem writing, and more, to develop students' language skills.
These events aim to develop students' enhance their communication and public speaking abilities, fostering confidence and creativity.
Vivegananthar Sinthanai Mandram:
Swami Vivekanandar Sinthanai Mandram aims to instill values of physical and mental well-being, morality, self-respect, and intellectual curiosity among students.
To achieve this, the organization conducts competitions and seminars on topics related to the life and philosophies of Swami Vivekananda.
Ulaga Thirukural Peravai:
The club promotes the universal moral values of Thirukkural through recitals, competitions, seminars, and other activities.
Kanithamizh Peravai:
The Kanithamizh Peravai, in collaboration with the Digital Connectors Club, releases a monthly e-magazine called "Thurigai." This magazine showcases students' creative works, including poems, drawings, photography, essays, and articles.
The club also provides training in Tamil typing, PowerPoint presentation, website creation, video editing, and more.
The Kanithamizh Peravai empowers students by training them to effectively utilize technology in our mother tongue, Tamil.
Environmental Club:
The club aims to save the environment from pollution and promotes environmental awareness among students. Guest lectures and awareness activities are organized regularly.
Toys Making Club:
The club imparts knowledge of self-employment through toy-making workshops. Resource persons from various departments are invited to train students.
